The Deputies arrive to a large 3 story asylum at the edge of Cougar Creek, not too far from the first set of murders. Coming to the front door, they were refused entry by Erin Habe, the Sanatorium Head. Claiming to be in the middle of important work, despite their letter of introduction from Sheriff Belor.
While half the party kept Habe distracted Garram, Edge and Sven, and Edward broke into the back door. Edward hid in the Storage and Sven under the table. When Habe finally departed from the front door to return to his studies, Edge was quick to stealthily follow him upstairs while Garram opened the front door. Edge found himself watching Eben take notes on a large sickened looking man in a straight jacket in the attic.
Chopska decided to call attention to himself by shouting and banging on the walls, and at once the dark Sanatorium sprung to life. Two burly Tiefling Orderlies burst through their room door, and in Habe’s panic, he let loose all the patients upstairs and attempted to flee, taking the time to bang on the basement before running down the hall. Unfortunately for Habe, Messer was waiting by the exit and quickly put him down.
Chopska, Edward, and Adoror dealt with the orderlies downstairs, Sven ran up the stairs to help Edge, who was being torn apart by a wererat and the large diseased man.
All seemed under control, until the basement door slammed open and a horde of zombies poured forth.
Edward was torn apart by the horde, managing only to get away with luck, he ran up the stairs, finding Sven having entranced the large man with his song, and the wererat bleeding on the floor. Unfortunately, the Pirate intimidated the man, and broke Sven’s hold over him. The Man charged into Edward, crushing him against the wall and putting him down for the count.
Downstairs, the remaining heroes were fending off the horde of zombies, with Adoror sustaining heavy wounds. Tearing through the hordes they found the source of them, a Necromancer named Carzalu. Fearing himself to be discovered, Carzalu was determined to keep his laboratory a secret. Adoror gave it his all, pushing through the zombie wall and striking down the Necromancer. Adoror then decided to head upstairs to see how it was going when he was taken down the stairs by the diseased man. He seemed to snap out of his insanity for a moment when he laid his eyes on Garram, who had walked in from looting the surrounding rooms during the battle, and he repeats a message given to him by ‘The Skinsaw Man’ before attacking Garram himself in an unholy rage. They killed the man and tied up the Doctor and Necromancer. Examining the man, they concluded he was indeed Grayst Sevilla, the man they came to see, and he was quickly succumbing to ghoul fever.
Edge went to explore the basement laboratory, coming across the Necromancer’s spellbook and charts and maps detailing ‘reported ghoul attacks’ in the Sandpoint region. Carzalu was obviously keeping track of these, and his notes concluded a strong Ghoul presence could be the cause of the upswing in attacks in the south.
The Deputies traveled back to Sandpoint, leaving Carzalu and Eben in the hands of Belor until their transfer to the Magnimar courts. The heroes decided to take a small rest to check their affairs and follow up on other leads. Adoror, Sven and Chopska decide to look into the old murders of Chopper.
